frozen-river-movie-posterPlot: Takes place in the days before Christmas near a little-known border crossing on the Mohawk reservation between New York State and Quebec. Here, the lure of fast money from smuggling presents a daily challenge to single moms who would otherwise be earning minimum wage. Two women – one white, one Mohawk, both single mothers faced with desperate circumstances – are drawn into the world of border smuggling across the frozen water of the St. Lawrence River. Ray and Lila – and a New York State Trooper as opponent in an evolving cat-and-mouse game.

frozen-river-1This film was directed and written by new comer  Courtney Hunt and starred Melissa Leo (Homicide) as the leading character Ray Eddy.  Melissa was a surprise in the Best Actress nominations at the Oscars…that is the only reason I have even heard of this film.  I found it a good solid film, but not very pretty to look at and not exactly my favorite subject.  I found the film to be a mix between Fargo and an immigration documentary.  Anyway, not really a fan, wouldn’t go out of my way to recommend this film, but it is good.

I recommend this film for anyone 14+ and give the film **1/2.
