Wet Hot American Summer – Film Review

Filed under: Uncategorized — smackamack @ 12:50 pm

Plot: The setting is Camp Firewood, the year 1981. It’s the last day before everyone goes back to the real world, but there’s still a summer’s worth of unfinished business to resolve. At the center of the action is camp director Beth, who struggles to keep order while she falls in love with the local astrophysics professor. He is busy trying to save the camp from a deadly piece of NASA’s Skylab which is hurtling toward earth. All that, plus: a dangerous waterfall rescue, love triangles, misfits, cool kids, and talking vegetable cans. The questions will all be resolved, of course, at the big talent show at the end of the day.

wet_hot_american_summer-112This film had the most amazing cast… Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Michael Ian Black, Paul Rudd, Molly Shannon, Amy Poehler and Elizabeth Banks.  It was definitely worth watching just to see all these awesome comedians in one film.

The film itself was funny, but not hilarious.  I was actually surprised, it was better than I thought it was…and I definitely laughed out-loud numerous times.  It’s one of those silly films that’s good for a laugh…but nothing serious.  I also really liked the setting at a summer camp, fantastic.

I was also surprised at the amount of awareness for gay marriage…that was definitely a plesant surprise, dont see that in most teenage comedy films.

Oh, and my favorite part…I love how in all these comedies, the main actors are about 10 years too old for the roles…sometimes 15 years too old.  It’s hilarious…thats why I liked Superbad, it was one of the first comedies that I had ever seen where the main actors were the correct age…and they actually looked too young!

I recommend this film for mostly teenagers, but anyone who likes stupid comedies…ages 16+.

I give this film ***.
