The Diary of Anne Frank ( 1959) – Film Review

AnneFrank-1Plot: Based on Anne Frank’s diary, and the stage play that was adapted from it: In Nazi-occupied Holland, Otto Frank and his family have decided to go into hiding, because of the increasing persecutions against Jews. The businessman Kraler and his assistant Miep prepare a hiding place in the rooms above their place of business, and arrange for the Franks and another family, the Van Daans, to stay there. Later on, they are joined by the dentist Dussel. Together, they try to avoid detection while hoping for Holland to be liberated by the Allies, but even meeting basic needs can become a challenge, and even minor incidents could present a grave risk.

I read the book in…6th grade, and I have seen my fair share of made for TV films, but never this original classic.  Although this was a long film, I found it very enjoyable.  They even filmed several of the scenes at the actual house.  I went to see the house 2 years ago with Miriam, and it actually isn’t as small as they make it out to be.  Anne’s room was bigger than mine, but obviously never leaving an indoor space for several years would be hell on earth…constant fear of being found out.

The acting was fantastic, my only big problem with this film was that the leading lady looked about 20, when she was supposed to be 13.  Also, I found it pretty hilarious that her love interest Peter was the same actor that plays Tony in West Side Story.  I just couldn’t stop thinking about him in that film!

I recommend this film for anyone and everyone and give it 3.5/5 stars.
