mannequin2Plot:Jonathan Switcher is a young artist. He just doesn’t seem to last in any job he does. But when he builds a mannequin, he makes it so perfect, he falls in love with it. It is the first thing he has made that makes him feel like a real artist. The mannequin ends up in the window of a big department store. When he saves the life of an old lady who happens to be the owner of that store, he is rewarded by getting a job at the store as stock boy. Later the mannequin comes to life as Emmy, who was an ancient Egyptian living in the year 2514BC. The two redesign the window display to make it most eye catching in town. The store competitors are not happy and will do anything to stop them!

up-mannequinI would like to forewarn any reader that I LOVE 80s films…truly, deeply, madly.  Anyway, I have seen sooooo many 80s films and I can usually tell a good one from a bad one.  This one was, was so cute.  It’s not in the big leagues with Say Anything or 16 Candles, but, its definitely worth the viewing.

Lately all the 80s films I have seen I have been disappointed with (Porky’s, Weird Science), but this was great! It’s also a plus when it has Andrew McCarthy and Kim Cattrall!

Although I am reviewing this film, here are some of my favorite 80s films that you must see (if you like the genre):

Sixteen Candles

Say Anything

Breakfast Club

Better Off Dead

Heathers

Secret to My Success

…I am sure I am missing some of the essentials, but these are my off the top favorites.

I give this film 3.75/5 stars!

The Calcium Kid (2004) – Film Review

Plot:  The film is a mockumentary comedy, in which Bloom plays young milkman Jimmy. He is an amateur boxer who by a bizarre twist of events ends up fighting the world champion in his home town.

This film was definitely strange…an unsuccessful mocumentary.  Orlando Bloom plays a sweet kid whose bones are incredibly strong due to drinking milk everyday.  Some how, he manages to get into the position of taking on the world champion boxer.  Anyway, the film had a few funny momemts, but all in all it totally failed.

I don’t exactly recommend this film, but if you love boxing, Orlando Bloom, and british mocumentaries…you should check it out.  I give this film 1.5/5 stars.

The Office (2005-Present) – TV Review

the-office-season-3-dvd-1

0000039609_20070509125807Plot: A remake of the hit 2001 BBC TV series The Office (2001), this is a mockumentary that documents the exploits of a paper supply company in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Made up of head chief Michael Scott, a harmlessly deluded and ignorantly insensitive boss who cares about the welfare of his employees while trying to put his own spin on company policy. With an office including the likes of various peers who have their own hangups, The Office (2005) takes a look at the lives of its co-workers: bored but talented salesman Jim, his mildly sociopathic, butt kissing enemy Dwight, mildly righteous receptionist Pam, and indifferent temp Ryan.

one-schrute-buckI was officially obsessed with the originally British version of this show in England – I thought it was brilliant (until I saw Extras and it was even better).  I love Ricky Gervais.  I remember seeing the American one preview night with Mark when we first started dating, however, it was an exact copy.  It didn’t work.

Needless to say, it has done very well, so I decided to watch it.  I skipped the first season because I had seen some of it and it was crap.  However, starting with the second season, it was awesome!  It really found its feet, the actors grew into the characters, and it became its own!  It’s not like the UK version, but its definitely worth watching.

I just love Jim and Pam…so adorable!

Dwight is amazing…

I recommend this show for anyone into this type of humor (mockumentary, awkward pauses etc)… I give the series thus far 4/5 stars.

Brideshead Revisited (2008) – Film Review

brideshead-revisited

Plot: The memoirs of Captain Charles Ryder who is stationed at Brideshead Castle during WWII and remembers his involvement with the owners of the Brideshead estate: the aristocratic yet Catholic Flyte family and in particular brother and sister Sebastian and Julia.

arts-graphics-2008_1186294aBefore watching this film I did as everyone told me…I tried to watch the original PBS mini-series with Jermey Irons.  Although the mini-series was interesting, I didn’t get past the first 3 episodes (I think there were 12) due to its very slow build up.  The most shocking thing for me was the heavily underlying tones of sexuality between the two main characters.  I couldn’t make out whether Sebatian was gay or not.  However, the film cleared that up.

The film took a huge risk by putting it blatantly that Sebastian was a gay man struggling with his love for Charles.  The book and mini-series never specifically say that Sebastian in gay, but the movie made it abundantly clear.  I found this to be better because then some of Sebastian’s strange behavior was accountable…like carrying around a stuffed teddy bear.

The film was beautiful and was actually very well done for a remake/ 2 hour adaption of a 13 hour mini series.  I found that Matthew Goode did a superb job as Charles in place of Jeremy Irons, however, the actor who played Sebastian I found highly disappointing.  All I can really say after watching this film is…Matthew Goode is gorgeous.  I feel in love with him when I first saw Chasing Liberty as a young teenager, and now, I am even more in love with him.

I recommend this film for people who have either seen the mini-series/read the book.  I also recommend it for people who like period pieces and hot men…I give this film a 3/5 stars.

Below is a picture from the original (note the teddy bear).

Earth Girls Are Easy (1988) – Film Review

earth_girls_are_easy

wiplocPlot: Love amongst the stars is every ‘valley’ girls dream…. and for Valerie (Geena Davis – The Fly) it’s a dream come true when love literally crash lands into her life in the form of intergalactic hardware plunging into her pool…

My friend Caitlin recommend we watch this film, I was obviously kind of tentative due to the fact that it looked…retarded.  However, this movie was AWESOME. AWESOMELY BAD. I LOVE 80s films, probably my favorite sub-genre ever.  Soooo, this film was right up my alley.  We was not only stupid and about aliens, but also a musical with bad acting and story line.  Awesome.

earthgirls17Jim Carrey, Damon Waynes and Jeff Goldblum all star as aliens who come down to earth to find women.  Geena Davis plays a nail manicurist who falls in love with Jeff Goldblum after all of his alien hair is shaved.  The best scene of this film is by far the love scene between the two.  Not only is there awesome music, sparkly jewels, but also horrible graphics.

cActually, a part of me fell in love with Jeff Goldblum I am embarrassed to admit, but he was hot in this film!  Also, I learned that during the film he and Davis were married, I had no idea! They were married from 87-90.  Crazy!

Anyway, if you like 80s films make sure you check this one out…if you don’t like awesomely bad 80s films, don’t watch this! I recommend this for people 15+ and give it 3/5 stars.
